Stream of Consciousness

Update in Progress

I watched an Instagram Live conversation with an actor and a film festival coordinator. She said, "maybe this is downtime because you've been grinding so long, you need the rest" or some degree of that sentiment. A strange space we find ourselves in now. As creatives, it can be difficult if in the time-space provided we are unable to produce [meaningful work]. I find it difficult. My mind is overflowing. My hand is itching. But when the images are too clear it is debilitating. I work with themes, processes and a direction, but when that becomes prescriptive for a specific outcome or image, I need to take a step back. I want to learn something from the work, to discover or understand something new in the process; this can be about the materials and process, about the concepts or themes, and/or about myself.

What motivates one to work? To make work?

The act of understanding includes allowing space for and recognizing misunderstandings. Hopefully sparking the attempt to examine from a new perspective. As I re-engage old projects, re-envision current ones, and plan for new ways of exploring future projects, I think on my relationship to writing about my processes, Thought included. So, I am adding a blog to this site. Operating differently from social media interactions (my Instagram story is a stream of consciousness/non-sequitur experiment) this space is free from the immediacy of engagement allowing time for reflection and unfiltered thought response to whatever I am involved in at the time, wherever I am, what I'm looking at or doing. Anything public is filtered, a performance of self - even some things in private are behaved performances - but I will try to keep this space as a direct link to my thoughts and processes. This is not a strict regimented post, but I will attempt to update as the work progresses or goes through changes. If you read them, let me know what you think.

I will be altering the website, removing and updating images over the next [undetermined amount of time], changing the layout and structure. As I use this "downtime" to restructure my practices, I recognize that I too am updating my thoughts and ways of understanding. Allowing space for mistakes, misunderstandings, and prescriptive thought. It's all a Work in Progress.

    An Artist's Personal Blog.

Updates, news, where I am, things I'm looking at or thinking about, processes, and Works in Progress notes. I welcome you to engage with me in discovery.
